The humble Sloppy Joe gets an upgrade in this innovative take on an American classic. Instead of old-fashioned Beef, this Sloppy Joe recipe uses soft and fall-apart Lamb mince. Try it as a mid-week family supper – the kids will LOVE it.

Preparation: 15 mins
Cooking: 20 mins

Serves 6-8

500g lamb mince

2 tablespoons rapeseed or olive oil

1 onion, chopped

1 garlic clove, crushed

1 small green pepper, deseeded and finely diced

350ml passata

4 tablespoons tomato ketchup (normal or spicy)

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

1 tablespoon brown sugar (optional)

1 teaspoon English mustard

Salt and pepper

Hot chilli sauce, optional

8 small burger rolls (or 6 large ones), sliced

6-8 Cheddar cheese slices

  • Heat the oil in a large pan and add the mince onion, garlic and pepper. Fry over a high heat until brown, breaking up the mixture with a wooden spoon.
  • After browning well, add the passata, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, mustard, and 100ml of water. Stir and leave to simmer for 20 minutes over a gentle heat. Add the seasoning and chilli sauce, if using.
  • Warm the rolls in the oven or toaster. Pile lamb mixture onto each roll base, top with a slice of cheese and finish with the roll lid.
  • Serve with potato wedges and a crisp green salad.

Chef's Tip:

Unlike other burgers, this one probably needs cutlery!
